VINS Nature Center

Central Vermont is a wonderful destination for nature lovers, and if you find yourself in the Woodstock area, we highly recommend a visit to the Vermont Institute of Natural Science (VINS). While its primary mission is as a bird sanctuary, VINS has thoughtfully developed a public-friendly attraction that’s both educational and entertaining—and they’ve truly done it right. The staff and animal handlers put on engaging live shows suitable for all ages, offering close-up encounters and fascinating insights into the world of birds. The property also features scenic nature trails that stretch out to the west side of Quechee Gorge and upriver from the dam, perfect for a peaceful walk through Vermont’s natural beauty. One of the standout exhibits is their dinosaur display, which explores the evolutionary connection between dinosaurs and modern birds—a favorite among curious minds of all ages. And don’t miss their sculpture garden, widely considered one of the best in the state, blending art and nature in a serene setting. Whether you're just passing through or planning a full day immersed in nature, a stop at VINS promises a fantastic experience filled with discovery, beauty, and warm hospitality.
