Kalmar Nyckel

Tucked away off the beaten path in Wilmington, Delaware, the Kalmar Nyckel is a magnificent destination rich in historical significance. We stumbled upon this remarkable ship by chance while exploring the Delaware River Valley one Saturday afternoon—and we’re so glad we did. The Kalmar Nyckel was one of America’s pioneering colonial ships, with historical importance that rivals even the Mayflower. The original vessel sailed from Sweden to the New World in 1638, carrying passengers who would establish the first permanent European settlement in the Delaware Valley. Today’s Kalmar Nyckel serves as a dynamic platform for the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation’s educational programs. It also hosts diplomatic, recreational, governmental, and commemorative events. Whether you visit the ship at its home shipyard or catch it during one of its port visits, you’ll get a vivid sense of what life was like in 1638—through dockside tours or by sailing aboard this faithful re-creation. The ship offers regularly scheduled public tours and sails, and is also available for private charter. With its deep historical roots and reverent preservation, the Kalmar Nyckel is a truly worthwhile experience—and easily accessible from major cities throughout the mid-Atlantic region.
