Virginia Air & Space Science Center

Virginia Air & Space Science Center

The Virginia Air & Space Science Center, located right next to Langley Air Force Base, is a fantastic destination for families of all ages. Langley played a pivotal role in helping America reach the moon and return, and today, several Langley-developed devices are proudly on display at the museum. Inside, visitors will find everything from Boeing 747 models to a massive replica of the Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier, alongside a model of the original USS Yorktown from World War I. A highlight is the museum’s four-story hangar, filled with real airplanes mounted overhead. Guests can take an elevator to the third floor for a unique vantage point and even walk through a full aircraft—from cockpit to tail. The museum features exhibits covering the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, and Artemis missions, including actual capsules and the Apollo 12 spacecraft piloted by Peter Conrad (famously marked with his “Whoopee!”). A side-by-side comparison of the Apollo and Orion capsules showcases the advancements in space technology, and there are also displays of the rockets that launched these historic missions. For younger visitors, the museum offers two floors of interactive exhibits, including a space shuttle landing simulator and a blow-up lunar habitat that could one day be used on the moon. Admission includes a ticket to the IMAX theater, which screens a variety of space-themed films—we highly recommend catching at least one during your visit. The museum’s volunteer docents, many of whom are retired NASA engineers, bring incredible depth to the experience with their insights and firsthand stories. Their presence adds a personal and inspiring touch to an already engaging museum. Whether you're a space enthusiast, a history buff, or simply looking for a memorable family outing, the Virginia Air & Space Science Center offers a rich blend of education, inspiration, and fun—a true gem in Hampton, Virginia.
