Nauticus
Nauticus, located in Norfolk, Virginia, is a maritime discovery center that offers a unique and interactive experience for visitors of all ages. It’s far more than a museum—it’s an immersive destination that blends history, science, and hands-on learning in a fun and engaging way. First, the third floor features seven interactive attractions that make Nauticus a standout for experiential learning. The “Norfolk in Time” exhibit shares powerful stories of history, culture, science, technology, and industry, highlighting Norfolk’s resilience through human challenges. The “You Can Impact the Landscape” exhibit is a sandbox experience where visitors can shape mountains, rivers, and landscapes, with a projection overlay that simulates water runoff and storage. The “Intrepid” exhibit demonstrates the altitudes of aircraft, from the Kitty Hawk at 30 feet to the International Space Station at 1.3 million feet. For younger guests, the “Mini Aquarium” and “Under the Sea Play Area” offer engaging, age-appropriate fun. The “Our Port Exhibit” teaches visitors about the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay and the types of ships and goods that pass through—fun fact: Red Bull, made in Belgium and Austria, is one of the top imports. Other highlights include “Steward of the Seas” and “Heart of the Navy”, two interactive Navy exhibits, and “Shipshape Showdown”, a trivia-based theater experience. The “Design, Build, Sail!” exhibit is perfect for aspiring sailors, offering insights into boat design and sailing techniques. For an additional experience, visitors can sail aboard the Schooner Virginia—a feature not included with general admission. Second, a tour of the Battleship Wisconsin is a must. This massive floating fortress allows guests to explore the living and working quarters of sailors. Before boarding, the “X-ray” display offers a fascinating look at the ship’s internal structure, enhancing the overall experience. Third, the Hampton Roads Naval Museum, located on the second floor, is a separate but complementary attraction. It’s free to the public and adds even more depth to the maritime journey (see separate review below). Whether you're a history enthusiast, a science lover, or simply seeking a memorable family outing, Nauticus has something for everyone. It’s a place where learning comes alive, and every visit leaves you inspired.
