The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia, is the MUCH LARGER companion facility to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.—and it’s a treasure trove for aviation and space enthusiasts. Located near Washington Dulles International Airport, this expansive museum offers an unforgettable experience for visitors of all ages. Among its standout attractions is the Space Shuttle Discovery, a centerpiece that inspires awe. Other significant artifacts include the Enola Gay, the Boeing 367-80, the SR-71 Blackbird, and the Concorde, all housed within the Boeing Aviation Hangar and the James S. McDonnell Space Hangar, which together contain thousands of aviation and space artifacts. The Donald D. Engen Observation Tower provides a stunning view of landing operations at the adjacent airport, while the Airbus IMAX Theater immerses guests in large-format films with six-channel digital surround sound. At the Mary Baker Engen Restoration Hangar, visitors can watch museum specialists at work, restoring rare and historic aircraft. Admission to the museum is free, making it accessible to everyone, though there is a parking fee. Exhibits span human spaceflight, World War II aviation, and much more, with Discovery Stations and simulators offering hands-on learning experiences that bring history and science to life. This museum is easily one of the top 10 places we've ever visited, combining scale, substance, and inspiration in a way few destinations can match.
