St. Clements Island Museum

St. Clements Island Museum

St. Clement’s Island is truly a place like no other. As the birthplace of Maryland, visitors can almost hear the joyful voices of the first colonists who landed on its shores in 1634, following a long and weary winter voyage from England. The island is both scenic and rich in history, offering a tranquil retreat steeped in natural beauty. Located on the mainland, the St. Clement’s Island Museum shares this important colonial story through detailed exhibits, vivid murals, and hands-on artifacts designed to engage visitors of all ages. From Memorial Day weekend through September, the museum offers weekend water taxi service to the island, weather permitting. The five-minute ride is a pleasant journey to the island, now designated as a Maryland state park. Once there, guests can stroll the beach, enjoy a picnic, and explore educational panels that highlight the island’s historical significance. Back at the museum, additional attractions include a 19th-century one-room schoolhouse, a dory boat exhibit, a picnic area, and a museum store filled with unique gifts and souvenirs. Open year-round, the museum also hosts a variety of educational programs and special events, making it a meaningful destination for history lovers and families alike.
