New Deck Tavern

It took a little searching, but I finally found a great spot in University City that offers delicious food at very reasonable prices—New Deck Tavern on Sansom Street. University City is a vibrant college town, filled with bars, food trucks, and high-end dining options catering to the medical and academic crowd. But if you're looking for a casual place to relax, grab a drink, and enjoy some hearty fare, New Deck Tavern hits the mark. Start with their homemade cheesesteak egg rolls—a crowd favorite and the perfect appetizer. If you're craving a sandwich, you can't go wrong with any of their steak options, but we especially loved the Reuben, which was flavorful and perfectly prepared. For a full entrée, the fish and chips and Shepherd’s pie are must-tries—both comforting and satisfying. In fact, the fish and chips, Reuben sandwich, and cheesesteak egg rolls all earned our Golden Beacon Award for outstanding flavor, presentation, and quality ingredients. Be sure to stop in and say hello to the welcoming owners and friendly staff. You’re guaranteed to have a great time while exploring the University of Pennsylvania and all that University City, Philadelphia has to offer.
