Eastern State Penitentiary
Eastern State Penitentiary
Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site was once the most famous and expensive prison in the world, but today it stands in haunting ruin—a chilling landscape of crumbling cellblocks and empty guard towers. It was the world’s first true “penitentiary,” designed to inspire penitence and reflection in the hearts of its inmates. Its vaulted, sky-lit cells once housed some of America’s most notorious criminals, including bank robber Willie Sutton and Al Capone. Modern-day tours include access to the cellblocks, solitary punishment cells, Al Capone’s restored cell, and Death Row. With its stark towers and soaring fortress walls, Eastern State was built to intimidate, and it certainly succeeded. Though it’s now a lost world of decay, the site remains deeply compelling—especially with its knowledgeable staff, who bring its history to life with powerful storytelling and immersive exhibits.
