Maryland Historical Society
The Maryland Historical Society offers outstanding exhibits that showcase the people, art, and culture of Maryland’s past. Highlights include a compelling collection of artifacts from the War of 1812, as well as exhibits covering events before and during the Civil War, featuring key battles and influential figures such as John Brown, Harriet Tubman, and Frederick Douglass, among others. The museum also houses an impressive furniture collection, a comprehensive research library, and several multi-purpose function rooms. One of the most engaging features is a hands-on map of Maryland, pinpointing notable people and places across the state. For younger visitors, the museum offers interactive, kid-friendly exhibits. Children 10 years and older can try their hand at caulking ships, using ropes to seal them watertight—just as young apprentices did in the past. In the “Nippers Room,” kids can play with modern toys while learning about the historic toys that inspired them. They’ll enjoy matching familiar favorites with their historical counterparts, making for a fun and educational experience.
