Oceanarium & Lobster Hatchery

Oceanarium & Lobster Hatchery

A female lobster can produce thousands of eggs, though survival rates vary widely. Each year, the dedicated staff at the Oceanarium release approximately 20,000 baby lobsters into the waters off Mount Desert Island, all successfully bred and hatched on-site. This important conservation effort receives no state funding, relying instead on the museum’s mission and the generous support of its visitors. The lobster hatchery is just one of many educational and interactive programs offered at the Oceanarium. Other highlights include the touch tank, lobster talks, and a guided nature walk through the marsh—all of which are both entertaining and informative. Led by knowledgeable and engaging staff, we had a truly enjoyable experience while learning fascinating facts about ocean life. It’s a rare opportunity to get up close and personal with the creatures of the sea at what we consider the top educational attraction in Bar Harbor. And don’t let the tragic July 2011 fire deter you—while some buildings were lost, all programs remain fully operational and just as enjoyable as eve
