Ocean County Historical Society
The gracious and knowledgeable volunteers of the Ocean County Historical Society take pride in telling the stories of Ocean County, New Jersey. Their museum, located in the historic Pierson-Sculthorp House—a Victorian-era home built in stages between 1820 and 1866—features permanent collections that showcase the lifestyles and occupations of early Ocean County families. Exhibits include the history of Lighter-Than-Air aviation at Lakehurst Naval Air Station, including the Hindenburg disaster, as well as Revolutionary War and Civil War memorabilia, fossils, Native American artifacts, and Barnegat Bay duck decoys. To further enrich the visitor experience, the Society installs three special exhibits annually, offering fresh perspectives on the county’s rich heritage. Guided tours are available regularly, with special appointments for school and community groups. For school visits, engaging presentations such as Butter Making, Native American/Lenni Lenape culture, and Laundry Day bring history to life. Whether you explore the museum, research library, or tranquil gardens, a visit to the Ocean County Historical Society offers a meaningful journey into the heart of the region’s past.
