Historic Jamestowne, co-administered by the National Park Service and Preservation Virginia, is one of the five cornerstone attractions in the Historic Triangle. Visitors venture onto Jamestown Island, home to an active archaeological dig, the Archaearium museum, a visitor center, a reconstructed fort, and a glass-blowing house—a truly mesmerizing sight in action. The site’s mission is to preserve the birthplace of America, marking the location of the first successful permanent English settlement. Over the years, archaeologists have recovered millions of 17th-century artifacts, now housed in two buildings filled with remarkable discoveries that bring early colonial life into vivid focus. Inside the Archaearium, two high-tech exhibits stand out: one features a facial reconstruction of a skeleton believed to be one of the original settlers, and the other offers a video viewfinder that recreates the buildings and fort as they appeared 400 years ago, fully animated in their original working order. And while you’re there, don’t miss the chance to dine at the 2nd Street Bistro Café at the Dale House. Whether for lunch or an early dinner, it’s a terrific spot to relax and refuel—you won’t be disappointed.
