Jennie Wade House
Jennie Wade House
Jennie Wade was the only civilian killed during the three-day Battle of Gettysburg. She was staying at her sister’s home, where she was baking bread and assisting Union soldiers. The house, positioned in a strategic location, became part of the Union’s defensive line against Confederate forces. Tragically, while bent over behind two wooden doors, Jennie was struck in the back by a bullet that pierced both doors, ending her life instantly. A visit to the Jennie Wade House Museum offers a step-by-step account of the events surrounding her death and provides a powerful perspective on her contributions to the Union effort. It’s truly remarkable that the rest of the family survived, considering their home was literally caught in the crossfire of one of the Civil War’s most intense battles.
