Sandy Hook Lighthouse
Sandy Hook Lighthouse
Located within the Fort Hancock Historic District at the northern tip of Sandy Hook in the Gateway National Recreation Area, Sandy Hook Lighthouse holds the distinction of being the oldest working lighthouse in the United States. Constructed of stone in 1764, its interior was later lined with red brick in 1863 to reinforce the structure. Originally named the New York Lighthouse, it was built to guide mariners safely into the southern entrance of New York Harbor. Today, although it is no longer classified as a seacoast lighthouse, it remains under the care of the U.S. Coast Guard and continues to shine as a vital warning beacon for vessels navigating the hazardous shoals along the New Jersey coastline.
