Ship John Shoal Lighthouse

The lighthouse was named for the Ship John that sank around the shoal located in the Delaware River off of Cumberland county, NJ. The present second empire octagonal structure was first lit in 1874. It replaced an earlier octagonal screwpile structure. It has two stories consisting of a brown keeper's quarters on a brown cylinder built atop a cast iron and concrete caisson. It originally hosted a fourth order Fresnel lens that is currently at the Coast Guard Air Station in Pomona, NJ. The light was automated in 1973 and has been solar powered since 1997. It is owned by the Coast Guard and serves as an active aid to navigation. Parts of the wreckage are located at the Cumberland Historical Society in Greenwich.
