East Point Lighthouse
East Point Lighthouse
Located miles from developed land, south of Millville at the mouth of the Maurice River, this two-story Cape Cod-style brick dwelling with an octagonal rooftop tower has guided commercial fishermen and pleasure boaters since 1849. Its design served as inspiration for many early lighthouses built along the Pacific Coast. Originally equipped with a sixth-order Fresnel lens, the lighthouse later received a modern optic. During World War II, it was blacked out for security reasons, and in December 1941, the Coast Guard deemed it no longer necessary and officially decommissioned it. Without keepers or custodians to maintain the structure, deterioration quickly followed. Concerned by its condition, local residents founded the Maurice River Historical Society in February 1971 with the mission of restoring the lighthouse. Tragically, in July of that same year, the lighthouse suffered severe damage from a fire. Restoration efforts have continued ever since, led by the Historical Society and dedicated volunteers. Though no longer operational as a navigational aid, the lighthouse remains an active symbol of community pride and maritime heritage.
