Read House
The Historical Society of Delaware is dedicated to fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of history—particularly the rich heritage of Delaware—through research, exhibitions, publications, and educational programs. It operates a Research Library and the Delaware History Museum in Wilmington, along with three historic sites: Old Town Hall, Wilmington Square, and the Read House & Gardens. The museum is housed in a beautifully renovated Art Deco Woolworth building and features a rotating gallery of exhibits drawn from the Society’s collections. A highlight is Distinctively Delaware, a permanent, interactive exhibit that spans 400 years of the state’s history. The Read House & Gardens, located in historic New Castle, DE, was built in 1801 and showcases the height of Federal-style grandeur. Constructed by the son of one of Delaware’s signers of the Declaration of Independence, this 22-room, 14,000-square-foot mansion was the largest residence in the state at the time. The home is surrounded by a 1½-acre garden that includes a formal parterre flower garden, a specimen garden, and a large fruit orchard and kitchen garden. The staff and volunteers of the Historical Society do exceptional work and are deeply committed to promoting historical knowledge and enriching the experience of every visitor.
