Historical Society-DE Museum
The Historical Society of Delaware is committed to fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of history—particularly Delaware’s rich heritage—through research, exhibitions, publications, and educational programs. It operates a Research Library and the Delaware History Museum in Wilmington, along with three historic sites: Old Town Hall, Wilmington Square, and the Read House & Gardens. The museum is located in a beautifully restored Art Deco Woolworth building and features a rotating gallery of exhibits drawn from the Society’s extensive collections. A highlight is Distinctively Delaware, a permanent, interactive exhibit that spans 400 years of the state’s history. The Read House & Gardens, situated in historic New Castle, DE, was built in 1801 and exemplifies the grandeur of Federal-style architecture. Constructed by the son of one of Delaware’s signers of the Declaration of Independence, the 22-room, 14,000-square-foot mansion was the largest residence in the state at the time. It is surrounded by a 1½-acre garden that includes a formal parterre flower garden, a specimen garden, and a large fruit orchard and kitchen garden. The staff and volunteers of the Historical Society are passionate and dedicated, working tirelessly to promote historical knowledge and provide an enriching experience for all who visit.
