Air Mobility Command Museum

This museum showcases a growing collection of wonderfully preserved military aircraft and exhibits. Among the collection are some especially rare large aircraft and as a bonus there are always one or more of them that visitors can walk through. A huge propeller driven C-133 Cargo master sits across from a four engine jet powered C-141 Starlifter transport that is wheelchair accessible. The last surviving C-54M Skymaster specially modified to haul coal for the Berlin Airlift rests close to the first C-9 Nightingale medical evacuation jet. The inside exhibits are appropriately displayed in a restored WWII hangar that was once the home of a secret Army Air Force Rocket Test Center. An impressive B-17G Flying Fortress sits, immaculately restored complete with nose art, bristling with machine guns, and available for visitors to get close to and look inside the bomb bay. The centerpiece of the collection is a combat veteran C-47 with an amazing history during and after WW II. Guides will provide a narrated tour of the museum or visitors can wander on their own. A large screen flight simulator is available free for anyone over 10 years of age to select a plane from the collection and “fly” a mission right from Dover AFB. (The simulator is operated by qualified volunteer flight instructors so hours may vary.) The museum is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm Admission is FREE. Entrance is off DE Route 9.
