Mt Washington Cog Railway

There are a few options to reach the peak of the tallest Mountain east of the Mississippi, but the most historic way is the Cog Railroad. An area tourist attraction for more than 100 years, the railroad was first built to carry people up to the top of Mt. Washington. The train was powerful enough to handle the steep inclines and some of the worst weather our country has to offer by using a steam and coal engine. However, of late it had been getting very expensive to run the coal engines, so to keep the cost down an alternative engine was built that runs more efficiently on bio fuel. Although, for nostalgic reasons, they still run the coal and steam engine once a day, but plan on getting your tickets well in advance and paying a premium. The other trains run 10 to 15 trips daily in the peak season and you will have no difficulties booking your seat. In 2015 we had opportunity to come in and we review them and I must say that their staff is one of the best that we've ever seen since we've been doing this for 15 years!
