Saugus Iron Works
Saugus Iron Works

Buried and lost over 200 years ago was the original Saugus Iron Works. Then, in the 1950's a group excavated the original site to uncover artifacts of the lost mill. The group recreated the mill complete with water wheels, furnace, shops and all. The mill is powered by pumped water, including the furnace, which they operate only as part of the tour demonstration due to the massive amount of water and resources it would exhast to run throughout the day as it did centuries ago. In the summer time they run a smaller version to show the public how the furnace works. Be sure to check the website for times. They also have a small museum of the artifacts that they found on the site. The Saugus Iron Works National Park is well worth a stop on your visit to the area.
