Plimoth Plantation
Plimoth Plantation

When you hear Plymouth you think Pilgrims, Indians and the Mayflower - and the Plimoth Plantation has all three at two locations. First, a couple miles from the infamous Plymouth Rock is the Plimoth Plantation. The plantation is made up of four major exhibits that include a museum, Wampanoag Homesite, English Village and a working hands-on craft center. As a retired industrial arts teacher I found the woodcraft center to be amazing. It’s like the “Old Yankee Workshop” since there are no power tools used there. In the same center is an area where artisans create a variety of pottery. The 17th-Century English Village has costumed role players portraying life in the village during the time the Pilgrims came over. The Wampanoag Homesite has actual Native people who still practice the ways of their ancestors. They make their own food and clothing and construct their own homes. You can even watch a Native man shaping a "mishoon" canoe by burning the log to hollow it out in the traditional manner. The Visitor Center has a nice small museum with a new cinema showing ?the best in first run independent films? as well as their visitor?s introduction video. The second attraction, 100 yards from Plymouth Rock, is the Mayflower II. When at the Plimoth Plantation we recommend that you get to dual pass for both the Plantation and the Mayflower II, a full-scale reproduction of the ship that transported the Pilgrims in 1620 (please refer to our separate review).
