Basto Village

Basto Village, a New Jersey State Historic Site located in the Wharton State Forest, was prominent in the bog iron industry in the 1760's to the mid 1800's, producing pots, stoves, firebacks, and munitions for the American Revolution and the War of 1812. Other operations followed including brick and glass production, farming, cranberry production, and timbering. The Visitor Center Museum contains timelines and artifacts of historic life at Basto. Visitors may take a walking tour of more than 30 historic village buildings, which include a mansion house, grist and saw mills and workers' homes. Drop by the Annie M. Carter Nature Center for an introduction to the surrounding 120,000 acre Wharton State Forest located on County Route 542 at the Burlington- Atlantic county border. Basto is an easy drive from the Atlantic City and Philadelphia metro areas. Open daily from 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM.
