Located in Maryland at the entrance to the Potomac River, this light was first lit on September 20, 1830. It is a 36-foot red octagonal iron tower atop a brick and wood-framed house that was built by John Donohue. The first Keeper, James Davis, died after only a few months of service, so his wife Ann took over the responsibilities. It contained a fourth order Fresnel lens that has since been removed. The fog signal bell has also been removed and placed on display at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. In 1883 the lighthouse was expanded and modernized. During the Civil War, the land adjacent to the lighthouse was used as a prisoner of war camp. Legend has it that the lighthouse is haunted and in the early 1980's psychics investigated this suspicion and a séance was held which resulted in conjuring up an image of a Confederate soldier. In the 1990's the lighthouse was featured in a documentary on the Learning Channel on haunted lighthouses. Currently the lighthouse is owned by the Navy and not operational but open to the public for visitation one day a year. The grounds serve as a naval air test center.
