Oceanarium & Lobster Hatchery
Oceanarium & Lobster Hatchery

A female lobster can produce thousands of eggs, but the percentage of survival varies. Every year the staff at the Oceanarium release about 20,000 baby lobsters into the ocean off of Mount Desert Island that they have successfully bred and hatched. The state of Maine does not fund this initiative, so they need to rely on their mission and visitor support. This is just one of many educational programs and attractions that the museum has to offer. The others are the touch tank, lobster talk and the guided nature walk through the marsh. These along with the lobster hatchery are all entertaining and very educational. Led by knowledgeable and engaging staff, we truly had fun while at the same time learned some facts about ocean life. It was great to be up close and personal with the creatures of the sea at this number one educational attraction in Bar Harbor. And don’t let the tragic July 2011 fire discourage you. Even though some buildings were destroyed, all programs are fully operational and very enjoyable.
