Calvert Marine Museum
Calvert Marine Museum

With lots to see and do whether you are 2 or 92, the Calvert County Maritime Museum is the best educational place in Southern Maryland. They are much more than a lighthouse and some artifacts. We spent a half of a day there easily. They have many historical exhibits on the war of 1812, the Navy, shipbuilding, boats and much more. They have an amazing technological exhibit on Pangaea, when all the continents were one, and the species that were there at that time There is a great small aquarium which has Chesapeake native and intruder species. They also have a stingray and skate tank which includes a separate tank with the young skate as they develop from inside the pod to little swimmers. Their exceptional paleontology exhibit includes a lab showing how paleontologist excavate the fossils. Inside the discovery room there are many great hands on exhibits for children and the staff were really friendly and professional. Outside you can take a marsh walk or a boat trip. On your cruise you will sail the busy Solomons inner harbor, see Solomons Island and the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory, pass underneath the Governor Thomas Johnson Bridge and turn back at Pt. Patience and the Naval Recreation Center. While outside, you can also visit Squeak and Bubbles, the resident sea otters and be entertained by their aquatic antics. The Calvert County Maritime Museum provides superb family entertainment for less than the cost of a trip to the movies.
