St. Clements's Island is a place like no other. As the birthplace of Maryland, one can almost hear the joyful voices of the first colonists who arrived on her shore in 1634 after a weary, winter voyage from England. It's a scenic place, steeped in history and natural beauty. The St. Clements's Island Museum on the shore of the mainland shares this important colonial story and offers detailed exhibits, murals and hands-on artifacts for children. The museum provides water taxi transportation to the Island on weekends from Memorial Day weekend through September, weather permitting. The water taxi ride is a pleasant 5 minute jaunt to the Island, which is currently a Maryland state park. One can stroll the beach, enjoy a picnic, and read the educational panels in place for the interested visitor. The museum also offers a 19th-century one-room school, a dory boat exhibit, picnic area, and museum store full of unique gift items and souvenirs. The museum is open year round and offers education programs and special events throughout the year.
