USS Salem CA-139
USS Salem CA-139

The United States Naval Shipbuilding Museum, home of the USS Salem is located in historic Quincy. The USS Salem is the world's only preserved Heavy Cruiser. She was commissioned at the Boston Navy Yard on May 14, 1949 and served a distinguished 10 year career as flagship of the US Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean and the Second Fleet in the Atlantic. Although Salem never fired her mighty guns in anger, she served as a Lady of Diplomacy, rather than as a means of exerting brute force. Now "crewed" by a staff of museum professionals and enthusiastic volunteers, she is being restored to her full glory. The USS Salem has several interesting exhibits to see and she is available for special events such as birthday parties, reunions, and retirements. Also, for something exciting, you can spend the night aboard the ship with the Overnight Adventure Program! The USS Salem serves her country once again with her new mission of teaching people of all generations our nation's rich history of shipbuilding and naval duty.
