Turtle Back Zoo
One of the best attractions in the gateway area is the Turtleback Zoo. The zoo has an inexpensive admission and the small fee is definitely well spent. Children will love the free train that goes to the South Mountain Reservation. It's also really beautiful during the autumn and the springtime. The zoo also has a carousel for a small extra fee. The park is broken down into different sections. For example, the petting zoo has a huge barn while the Asian section is fenced with bamboo to give you the feeling that you are in China. It's also broken down into different sections as they have primates, the new Gibbon Exhibit and reptile exhibits too. If you have a little ones spend the $3 for the zoo key - when you put it into the many story boxes it will sing a song about the animal you are viewing. If you have older children, turn over the key over and you will hear a story about the animal. The staff at the Turtleback Zoo were really wonderful and helpful. My children truly loved the visit and we highly recommend this place the next time you are traveling to Essex County
