Delaware Breakwater Lighthouse
Delaware Breakwater Lighthouse

The Delaware Breakwater was built over a period of forty years from 1829 to 1869. The stone breakwater wall was designed to provide a safe harbor for sailing ships seeking to avoid the dangerous gales, nor'easters and hurricanes of the Atlantic. The U.S. Lighthouse Service established the Delaware Breakwater East End Lighthouse on the stone wall in 1885. The cast-iron light is brown in color, stands 61 feet tall and has a fourth order Fresnel lens. The lighthouse was automated in 1954 and decommissioned in 1996. This Lighthouse can be seen from the Cape May-Lewes Ferry and Cape Henlopen State Park.
