Harbor of Refuge Lighthouse
Harbor of Refuge Lighthouse

The National Harbor of Refuge Breakwater was constructed over a period of five years from 1897 to 1901. The 1.5 mile-long stone breakwater wall was established to accommodate deeper draft vessels that could not benefit from the protective, but more shallow Delaware Breakwater. The stone wall provided protection for wooden sailing ships and steel steamships alike from the powerful Atlantic nor'easters and hurricanes. The U.S. Lighthouse Service established the first Harbor of Refuge Lighthouse on the south end of the breakwater in 1908. The wood structure was ill-suited for rough seas and was later torn down in 1925 and replaced by the current steel caisson lighthouse in 1926. The Harbor of Refuge Lighthouse is black and white in color and stands 76 feet tall. The lighthouse remains an active aid to navigation and is currently being restored by the Delaware River & Bay Lighthouse Foundation.
