Cape May Lighthouse
Cape May Lighthouse

Description: The Cape May Lighthouse you see today was first illuminated on October 31, 1859. The third lighthouse to be built in Cape May, it replaced two structures built in 1823 and 1847 that are now in the Atlantic Ocean. The Cape May Lighthouse is a 157.5-foot tower. Visitors can climb the 199-step spiral staircase to the watch gallery for an unparalleled view of the Atlantic Ocean, the Delaware Bay and Cape May. Romantic nighttime tours of the lighthouse, called Stairway to the Stars are offered during the summer in which visitors take an entertaining trolley ride from Cape May to the Cape May Point State Park, then climb the lighthouse at night to see the sky ablaze with stars. This tour is the perfect ending to a Cape May day. The Cape May lighthouse is owned by the State of New Jersey and leased to the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts (MAC). The Cape May-based MAC is a non-profit historical, cultural, and arts organization dedicated to preserving, restoring and interpreting Cape May's rich Victorian heritage. The Lighthouse still serves its intended purpose of guiding vessels to the Delaware Bay.
