Brandywine Shoal Lighthouse
Brandywine Shoal Lighthouse

Located on the Delaware Bay off the shore of New Jersey, the Branywine Shoal Light Station was established in 1823 by the Coast Guard and a lightship was posted. A stationary light was built, but it was demolished by sea and replaced by a lightship until 1850, when the first screwpile lighthouse in the United States was erected. In 1914 the screwpile was replaced with a white-with-red-top cylindrical shaped building on a cast iron and concrete caisson. The tower is a 45-foot tall structure that includes a keeper's quarters. It was automated in 1974 and presently the light continues to shine via solar power as an active aid to navigation.
