Kalmar Nyckel
Kalmar Nyckel

Hidden away off the beaten path in Wilmington Delaware, the Kalmar Nyckel is a magnificent place to visit and experience rich historical significance. We came across this wonderful ship by chance as we were exploring the Delaware River Valley one Saturday afternoon and we were happy we did. The Kalmar Nyckel was one of America's pioneering colonial ships whose historical importance rivals that of the Mayflower. The original ship sailed from Sweden to the New World in 1638 leaving its passengers to establish the first permanent European settlement in the Delaware Valley. The present day Kalmar Nyckel provides a unique platform for the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation's educational programming. Additionally it provides a venue for diplomatic, recreational, governmental and commemorative functions. When you visit the ship at the shipyard, or on one of its many visits to other ports, you can experience what it must have been like in 1638 with a dockside tour or by sailing aboard this re-creation of the original vessel. She has regularly scheduled public tours and sails and is also available for private charter. With its abundant history and superlative reverence, the Kalmar Nyckel is certainly a worthwhile trip and easy to access from all major cities in the mid-Atlantic region.
