Sotterley Plantation
Sotterley Plantation

Overlooking the scenic Patuxent River in southern Maryland, Sotterley Plantation encompasses nearly 100 acres of rolling meadows, gardens and shoreline. Older than Mount Vernon and Monticello, Sotterley is the sole surviving Tidewater plantation in Maryland that is fully accessible to the public. Sotterley’s first family came to Maryland in 1699, and began construction on the house in 1703. The Plantation has been, at turns, a frontier farm, a thriving tobacco plantation, a colonial port and a busy steamboat landing. An 18th century warehouse, smokehouse, 19th century slave quarter and more than 25 out-buildings express the Plantation’s 300-year evolution. Its Colonial Revival gardens, grounds, and Mansion all provide an aura of the past felt by Sotterley’s many visitors. Numerous cultural and annual special events are also held throughout the year, such as its Riverside Wine Fest at Sotterley, Southern Maryland Quilt and Needlework Show, Ghosts of Sotterley Tours, and Holiday Candlelight Tours.
