Chesapeake Light Ship
Chesapeake Light Ship

Lightship 116 was commissioned in 1930 and was first assigned to Fenwick Island Shoals (DE) until 1933 when it was transferred to the Chesapeake (VA) lightship station. From 1942 until 1945 Lightship 116 was used as an armed inspection vessel patrolling the mouth of the Cape Cod Canal. After the war the ship returned to the Chesapeake Lightship Station where it remained for 20 years until replaced there by a Coast Guard Offshore Light Tower. The lightship's final duty was marking the southern approaches to the Delaware Bay from 1965 until 1970. Starting in 1971 Lightship 116 operated as a floating educational center by the National Park Service on the Potomac River and later in 1982 became part of the Baltimore Maritime Museum collection.
