Barnegat Lighthouse & State Park
Barnegat Lighthouse & State Park

Located on the north end of Long Beach Island, NJ, this light was first lit in 1859 over two decades after Barnegat was established as a light station. This is the second light built at this site. The first was built in 1835 and three years later it fell into the inlet. The current light is a 165-foot tall conical shaped brick and iron tower painted red above and white below that contained a first order Fresnel lens beginning in 1859. The lens was removed after the light was deactivated in the 20th century and stored in various places before being given to the Barnegat Light Historical Society in the 1950s. The three-story Victorian style keeper's cottage was torn down and the building materials salvaged in the 1920s.The light was shut down in 1927 and replaced by a lightship anchored 8 miles offshore. The lightship was used during World War II as a lookout for German submarines. The tower was renovated in 1991 and it is owned by the State of New Jersey under the oversight of the state Historic Site Commission that is in the New Jersey Division of Parks and Forestry in the Department of Environmental Protection. The tower is listed on the State and Federal Registries of Historic Societies and next to the Statue of Liberty it is the second most visited Historic site in New Jersey Phone: (609) 494-2016 Located on the north end of Long Beach Island, NJ, this light was first lit in 1859 over two decades after Barnegat was established as a light station.
