Ocean County Historical Society

Telling the Stories of Ocean County, New Jersey is what the gracious, informative volunteers of the Ocean County Historical Society take pride in doing. The museum is housed in the historic Pierson-Sculthorp House, a Victorian period house built in stages between 1820 and 1866. Their permanent collections depict the lifestyles and occupations of early Ocean County families. Permanent exhibits include the history of Lighter-Than-Air aviation at Lakehurst Naval Air Station including the Hindenburg disaster, local Revolutionary War and Civil War memorabilia, fossils and Native American artifacts, and Barnegat Bay duck decoys. Their changing exhibits help bring to life the many stories of Ocean County. They currently install three special exhibits each year as part of their efforts to expand the educational and informative value of these exhibits. The Historical Society offers regularly scheduled guided tours of the museum as well as special tours for school and community groups by appointment. For school groups they offer a variety of special presentations as part of the tour. These include Butter Making, Native American /Lenni Lenape culture, and Laundry Day. So come visit the Historical Society's museum, research library, or beautiful gardens and learn the story of Ocean County.
